Have you ever wished for an easy, no hassle way to turn your kitchen scraps into rich fertilizer for your garden? The Yimby Compost Tumbler might just be exactly what you’re after!
There are a variety of avenues for composting. Some people choose to build bins and manually turnover the compost with a pitch fork on a regular basis. We’re a little too practical for that. Regularly mixing the compost by hand is not a realistic commitment for us. We chose instead to purchase a Yimby Compost Tumbler and immediately fell in love with it (so much so that we bought another one for my mother-in-law for Christmas!). The Yimby composter has two convenient chambers: one for compost that is decomposing and one for the compost to which you’re actively adding items. It’s also easy to rotate, effectively evading the need to manually turnover the compost. The black color traps heat, speeding up rate of decomposition. The Yimby Compost Tumbler makes composting quick and easy.
The Bottom Line: Worthwhile purchase – We have found the Yimbly Compost Tumbler to be easy to use and effective at composting organic kitchen and yard waste. We liked it so much that we purchased a second one!
Pros:
- Easy to use
- Two compost chambers
- Durable
- Little to no smell
- Black color encourages heat
Cons:
- Compost chambers are small (could be a pro depending on how much compost you produce)
- Water collects in the exterior divots
- Compost tea (liquid) leaks from cracks – can be caught in buckets and poured around plants
- Time consuming to assemble
- As is the case with other tumblers, decomposition slows immensely in cold weather
Quality: Durable – We’ve had YIMBY Compost Tumbler outside year round for over 3 years, and it’s holding up perfectly
Functionality: Easy to use, easy to spin
Best for: People with kitchen waste and light yard waste (because chambers are small). It works well for our family of four.
The Details:
- Cost: $70-$95
- Capacity: 37 gallons
- Where to Buy: Home Depot or Amazon (Amazon has the better price. We bought our first YIMBY backyard tumbler new on Craigslist, so it never hurts to check there.)
- Use: Once your compost tumbler is assembled and located in the site of your choice (it will be heavy once filled, making it difficult to relocate), you’re ready to begin. Collect kitchen scraps from fruits and vegetables and toss them into the chamber with the “+” on the front. Give the tumbler a nice spin to mix everything up. Periodically add a handful of grass clippings or dried leaves. Remember no meat, no dairy, and no wheat. We also avoid placing troublesome weeds in the tumbler, so as to avoid any possibility of unintentionally spreading seeds in our garden when we distribute the finished compost.
